The automotive sector had a promising start to the year. According to figures published by the Association of Automotive Dealers of the Argentine Republic (Acara)sales grew 15.1% in the first month of 2023 and the dealerships closed the best January of the last four seasons.

In detail, in the first month of this year, 50,085 vehicles were patented throughout the country, 6,579 more than in January 2022 (+15.1%). What was done by the sector in 2021 (49,727 patented cars) and 2020 (44,972) was also improved. To find a better result, you have to go back to 2019, when 59,844 units were sold throughout the national territory.

The president of Acara, Ricardo Salome, He considered that January gave a good initial boost, in a year that they aspire to increase the 407,000 patented units by 5% in 2022, although he acknowledged that a higher figure would have been reached if they had had a greater supply available.

“There is a lot of work ahead with the entire value chain and also with the national authorities to increase the release of imports,” he commented.

“The other key issue is to give continuity to the spillover effect to other industries by continuing to promote national production, which today supplies almost 63% of the cars that are patented, something that was always an old desire of the sector and that seemed impossible to achieve. to reach, but that is today a trend that has come to stay”, stressed the reference from Acara.

According to the study published by Acara, the car that sold the most in January of this year was the Fiat Cronoswhich reached 7,076 patents throughout the country, thus achieving a strong improvement of 15.5% compared to the same month in 2022.

In addition, the Cronos surpassed by 82% the second most popular car, the peugeot 208. The best-selling vehicle of the French brand reached 3,873 patented units in the first month of the year, with which it reached a year-on-year increase of 19.8%.

Another encouraging fact for the automotive sector is that of the 50 best-selling cars in the country, only 16 suffered a drop in sales in January and the other 34 managed to grow in relation to the first month of 2022, many significantly.

In regards to brand segmentation, the first place is occupied by Toyota. While he doesn’t have any cars in the “top 3” sales, he does have three in the top 10 and five in the top 15. In total, the Japanese brand sold 10,310 cars in Argentina during the first month of the year.

The second place was occupied by Fiat, with 7,816 patents (almost all of the Cronos) and the third Volkswagen, with 6,080 closed sales.

When the results of 0km sales by province are analyzed, a particular situation is found. Of the 24 jurisdictions, only one fell and the other 23 grew in relation to January last year. The one that couldn’t keep up with the rest of the country was saint Louiswhich with 454 patented vehicles, suffered a retraction of 4% compared to the first month of 2022.

Of the rest, the interannual improvements of Formosa (43.8%), Neuquen (39.7%) and Land of Fire (31.6%).

Meanwhile, the most significant jurisdiction for the general market, Buenos Aires, registered 14,311 patents and achieved a year-on-year improvement of 18.5%. The second most important -Autonomous City of Buenos Aires- grew 15.6% and the third -Cordova- had a rebound of 4.5%.
