The Design Contest Red Dot Design Concept Award 2022, has awarded the highest prize to a project called XCELL, developed by Shanghai X-Idea Industrial Design Company. It is a motorcycle powered by hydrogen, but which has its objective, in addition to sustainability, in the safety of its driver.

The motorbike XCELL it has a Z-shape, which allows you to adjust the riding triangle to suit each person’s specific ergonomic needs, whether that be by electronically moving the handlebars, footrests or saddle. But it also has presets for sports, leisure and comfort use that best adapts to the terrain and its conditions.

But although these configurations are aimed at improving the handling of the motorcycle, and therefore making it more precise and safe for its user, X-Idea has also designed an intelligent active safety system based on a portable device that the driver carries while in command. This driving aid system (ADAS) includes assistance of night vision, holographic projection technology and blind curve prediction that allows the machine and its pilot to effectively “see” what is happening on the other side of a curve without visibility.

Regarding its sustainable aspect, this motorcycle will work with replaceable hydrogen cartridges, which allow a hypothetical range of 200 kilometers but a high speed of 200 km/h. This also requires a charging structure and replacement stations that must accompany the manufacture of this type of vehicle, which is not the first to seek this propulsion solution.

However that doesn’t seem to be a problem, as other scooter manufacturers are developing it. In Taiwan, the forerunner was Gogorowhich already has a network of 2,100 cartridge replacement points in operation, while in France, a similar vehicle called the Mob-Ion AM1which is in the testing phase.

At the car level, this technology is also expanding. At the recent Paris Salon, a French vehicle called the Namx HUV has been presented to society, which receives that name because it is a Hydrogen Utility Vehicle, and it also has a cartridge system that is installed as a second hydrogen tank that allows extended autonomy. These cartridges are removed in less than 30 seconds, placed in a hydrogen dispenser of the brand itself, and replaced by another with its full charge.

The Namx HUV It has an electric motor that works with a system of hydrogen fuel cell, since the entire installation can be carried on board a car, since it has the appropriate dimensions so that neither its weight nor its functionality is affected. In the case of a motorcycle or scooter, perhaps the best solution would be hydrogen injection for an internal combustion engine, although in the case of the XCELL, its name itself confirms that the path chosen has also been that of cells for power an electric motor.

There is no date of possible production nor mentions about it, in fact, it is a very futuristic concept that does not seem to have the possibility of having an immediate development, but as always happens with ideas that become prototypes, perhaps it is the beginning of a road that in a few years will be seen in the streets.
